It is with profound sadness that we honor the life and legacy of Vernon Weir, a beloved member of the American Sanctuary Association (ASA) family, who passed away in December 2021. Vernon’s steadfast dedication to animal welfare and his many years of service as ASA’s Executive Director and Treasurer have left an indelible mark on the sanctuary community.

For over two decades, Vernon played a pivotal role in shaping ASA into what it is today. His unwavering commitment to the protection of abused, neglected, and displaced animals was not just a professional endeavor but a personal passion. With quiet humility and resolute determination, Vernon worked tirelessly behind the scenes, advocating for animals, supporting sanctuaries across the country, and ensuring the highest standards of care.

Vernon was not only a trusted leader and advocate but also a compassionate mentor and friend. His kindness, wisdom, and integrity were felt by all who had the privilege of knowing him. He was a man of principle who believed deeply in the cause he championed—giving a voice to the voiceless and creating safe havens for animals who had known only suffering.

His legacy lives on in the countless animals whose lives he helped to save and the sanctuaries that continue to thrive because of his efforts. We at the American Sanctuary Association will forever be grateful for Vernon’s years of service, his generosity of spirit, and his unwavering commitment to making the world a better place for animals.

While we mourn his passing, we also celebrate his life—a life well-lived in service to others, both human and animal. Vernon’s memory will remain a guiding light for ASA and all who continue the work he cared so deeply about.

Rest in peace, Vernon. Your legacy lives on in the hearts of all who knew you, and in the sanctuary of every animal who found refuge thanks to your tireless dedication.
